ABSTRACT
The disease burdens posed by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Shigella are described in depth in the chapters by Svennerholm and Savarino and Kotloff et al., respectively. Both pathogens are important causes of diarrheal disease in children in developing countries and are major etiologic agents of traveler’s diarrhea.
