ABSTRACT
Shellfish of commercial importance include oysters, mussels, cockles, clams, and scallops. Normally they are harvested in coastal and estuarine waters and are therefore likely to be exposed to fecal contamination. Oysters and mussels are often grown in aquaculture, and are transported live in the shell, with or without refrigeration.
