ABSTRACT

Nearly all of the food and drink that we buy and then consume are packaged in some way. The main functions of food packaging are to protect and preserve the food, to maintain its quality and safety, and to reduce food waste. There can be a downside however and this is the possibility of contamination of the food by chemical migration from the packaging. Food-packaging materials are the most obvious example of the more general group of food contact materials and articles, which includes food-processing equipment, storage containers, kitchen utensils, and such like, that may come into contact (“touch”) with the food.
