Polar-Body Extrusion

First polar-body extrusion occurs on completion of the first meiotic division of the oocyte, around the time of ovulation. As such this process is not normally observed via time-lapse imaging in the clinical setting. Following extrusion of the first polar body the second meiotic division commences, arresting at the metaphase 2 stage. Extrusion of the first polar body is taken as an indication of oocyte nuclear maturity and potential for fertilization (Figure 5.1).
