ABSTRACT

Water scarcity is becoming one of the major limiting factors to economic development and welfare in most parts of the semiarid regions of the world. In India, about one third of geographical area has been classified as arid and semiarid regions. The arid regions are mostly confined to western and northwestern Rajasthan and extend to some parts of the states of Haryana, Punjab and Gujarat. The entire arid and semiarid region is characterized by low rainfall and has the problems either of water scarcity or poor quality ground water. The regions identified for poor quality water are major parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, North Western UP and South Western parts of Punjab.
