ABSTRACT

It is important to determine the extent and nature of the clinical signs observed. An exact description of the owner’s complaint is beneficial. The past medical history of the animal may help determine the role of current clinical findings. Documentation of a murmur over time and concurrent performance history may help elucidate the significance of the murmur. Respiratory and musculoskeletal diseases are other potential causes of suboptimal performance. While respiratory signs may indicate underlying heart failure, primary respiratory disease is considerably more common.
