ABSTRACT

If complications of trauma are to be approached comprehensively, the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral domains must be considered. Brain structure and function are commonly affected by physical injury. In addition to the more overt changes in level of consciousness or behavior, which can result from moderate to severe brain injury, physical trauma to the head can also lead to more subtle alterations of cognition and mood that nonetheless can have a profound impact on functioning and quality of life. One category of trauma complications that warrants specific consideration is traumatic brain injury (TBI).
