ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses issues concerning human resources in industry. A series of decisions must be made to bring a new person to the company. The first occurs in personnel selection. One objective is to introduce readers to the concepts of validity, reliability, power, efficiency, selection ratios, skill level, and Z-scores, which are part of personnel selection. Another objective associated with personnel selection is to give readers knowledge of computing Z-scores from validity measurements using correlation tables and, in the process, demonstrate the meanings of correlations. After personnel selections there are decisions about the placement of the person within the organization and, finally, decisions must be made about training. Of particular importance in training are the principles of training that include: motivate first, provide freedom from peer pressure, reinforce, emphasize job criteria and particularly where there is job similarity, and reduce concurrent task loads during training. Also there are different forms of training that are of particular importance in specific situations. Some of the various kinds of training are: proficiency training, segmented and part-task training, and group role playing with discussions. Also there is the alternative to job training in the form of job aids and times where one is more relevant. All of these activities are interrelated with one another and with job performance.
