ABSTRACT

In the past, advertisers made exaggerated claims about the technical capability of their computer systems. Now they also make exaggerated claims about the user friendliness of the user interfaces. Yet when it comes to applying human factors knowledge to the design and development of real products, the reality falls far short of the hype. System designers do not set out to design unfriendly interfaces, but clearly many interfaces are not as well matched to the capabilities and limitations of the users or the requirements of their tasks as the promotional material promises.
