ABSTRACT
The prevalence of colonic diverticular disease and related complications increased during the twentieth century [1]. Diverticulosis is common in Western industrialized societies and may be present in 50% of the elderly population [2]. With the proportion of the elderly in the population growing, the complications of diverticulosis will likely represent a significant health problem in the twenty-first century.
