ABSTRACT
Most authors attribute the first report of this disease to Anderson in 1847 [1] and the first series of patients to Warren [2]. The term pilonidal was first associated with this condition by Hodges in 1880 [3]. It was derived from the Latin pilus (hair) and nidus (nest) [4]. The term notes the association of trapped hair in this unusual form of natal cleft skin infection.
