ABSTRACT
The viscera are innervated by a population of C fibres which are refractory to stimulation unless sensitized by pathological processes (silent nociceptors).
There is poor localization of visceral pain due to the wide receptive fields for dorsal horn cells receiving input from visceral afferents. Localization of pain requires stimulation of the parietal peritoneum.
