ABSTRACT
Advanced technology has been dubbed the foundation of global industrial development. Proper transfer, implementation, and use of new technology are envisioned to produce a variety of products in quantities designed to satisfy local and regional demands in developing countries. Advances in electronic communication and business concepts as concurrent engineering and business process re-engineering, among others, could facilitate the rate at which products and processes that have been proven in industrialized nations, producing a win-win situation. This chapter aims to synthesize information on the technological needs of production systems for developing nations, using Nigeria as a case example. Using this needs assessment a framework will be developed, specifying the proper sequence and necessary procedures for technology adoption and the requirements for successful implementation of prescribed technologies. Utilization of existing human and natural resources in those countries as well as the necessary networks that must be developed with sources in the industrialized nations to make the process a success will be addressed.
