ABSTRACT
When a ship is moving in a seaway its increased motion, particularly in pitch and heave, produces additional resistance. The ship's master therefore has two choices, he can: (a) maintain the same engine power and travel at a slower forward speed or (b) increase the engine power to maintain his forward speed.
