ABSTRACT
Technologies for renewable fuels from biomass are being developed to reduce dependence on imported petroleum, decrease greenhouse-gas emissions, and increase national security. Many biochemical and thermochemical pathways have been proven technically; however, high production costs have prevented many pathways from being economically viable without government subsidies. Figure 6.1 summarizes typical pathways to produce hydrocarbon fuels from biomass via alcohols.
