ABSTRACT

Hyaline (literally, ‘glass-like’) cartilage coats the articular surfaces of synovial joints. It is composed of individual chondrocytes bound together by an extracellular matrix. The function of hyaline cartilage is to distribute weight-bearing forces and reduce friction. It is avascular, aneural, alymphatic and almost nonimmunogenic. It is nourished entirely via diffusion from the synovial fluid.
