ABSTRACT

Our understanding of genetics has advanced greatly since 1953, when Watson and Crick first deduced the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Conditions once grouped by phenotype have been shown to have similar genotypes. Knowledge of the genes responsible for specific diseases can lead to more accurate classifications and prognosis and, possibly, improved treatment techniques.
