Investigation and management of blunt abdominal trauma

ByJan Jansen, Malcolm A. Loudon

Trauma remains the fourth leading cause of death in Western societies, and the leading cause of death in the first four decades of life.1 The predominant mechanism in the UK is blunt injury. Precise data on injury patterns are lacking, but valuable information can be extracted from the recent NCEPOD report on the provision of trauma care in England and Wales. Nearly threequarters of patients had been involved in a road traffic collision or a fall from height, mechanisms generally associated with a blunt mode of injury.1 Almost one-fifth of patients had abdominal injuries.1 Blunt abdominal trauma, therefore, constitutes a considerable workload.
