ABSTRACT
So you plan to embark on a career in academic medicine, meaning that you will be closely associated with, and probably employed by, a university rather than primarily the NHS. You may do this for one of two main reasons. Firstly, the ‘research bug’ may have bitten you, or secondly you may wish to teach in a medical school setting. Both of these activities can be combined and universities need both types of people.
