ABSTRACT

Henning had recently been project manager for a quality assurance audit on the costs for Norway’s application to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. His DNV GL colleague Vibeke Binz Vallevik was deputy project manager, responsible for the cost uncertainty analysis. Brought in on the heels of a city selection process fraught with political nastiness, hidden agendas, and even a documentary exposé of the process, Henning and Vibeke’s audit revealed that the costs of hosting would be double the initial proposed costs. The application was scrapped. Not long after, Henning learned that Norway was considering an application to host the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) Road World Championship in 2017, which would require another city selection. He knew that he could apply his project management service to the selection process and help the Norwegian Cycling Association avoid the disastrous outcome of the Olympic hosting application. So he picked up the phone, called the president of the Norwegian Cycling Association, and said, “I think I can help you.”
