ABSTRACT

In most developing countries, urban growth is inextricably linked with slum expansion and poverty. Sixty-two percent of sub-Saharan Africa’s urban population and 43% of south-central Asia’s urban population live in slums. In 2000, more than 900 million urban dwellers lived in slums, representing nearly one-third of all urban dwellers worldwide. ough the proportion of the developing world’s urban population living in slums declined in the past 10 years, the absolute numbers of slum dwellers has actually grown considerably, and will continue to rise in the near future [26].
