ABSTRACT
Publishing scholarly research in academic journals involves a set of specific skills, which can be studied continuously and honed with experience. The set of skills, beyond value-added scholarly content which is necessary but not sufficient, includes manuscript preparation, manuscript revision, deconstruction and developmental reviewing of other authors’ work, and neutral professionalism in communications with action editors, reviewers, and other authors. The chapter uses the term “action editor” to refer to any of the possibilities of editor in chief, coeditor, or associate editor for journal decision. The author draws on experiences as editor, author, and reviewer, together with some available information on journal process and developmental reviewing, to offer advice on this set of skills.
