ABSTRACT

The key issues in pest management are largely matters of sustainability. These include the notion of economic sustainability (maintaining producer profits), environmental sustainability (choosing and using tactics in such a way as to minimize detrimental impacts on the environment), and sustainability of tactics (using tactics in such a way that their effectiveness is maintained through time). At the heart of these issues of sustainability is the recognition that not all pests require management. Defining when management is necessary is the raison d'être of pest management decision making.
