ABSTRACT
Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the second most abundant metal. It is the metallic iron at the earth's center which accounts for its magnetic field as well as for its overall mass density. This metallic iron was exploited many centuries ago for navigation purposes with the pioneering development of the magnetic compass.
