Alcohol and the Liver

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) accounts for a substantial proportion of alcohol-related morbidity and mortality throughout Europe, and is one of the most important consequences of chronic alcohol misuse. This review will consider the epidemiology of ALD, the basis of individual susceptibility, the major theories of pathogenesis, and recent advances in treatment including liver transplantation.
