ABSTRACT

Miniaturization and portability of computerized devices has given rise to a number of gadgets, including PDAs, that can be carried or worn like clothing or even implanted. Proponents of wearables state that today’s computers, which are bound to a static location such as a desk, and laptops do not fulfill the promise or potential of computers. Making computer applications available through items such as eyeglasses or clothing would increase flexibility and enhance use. A wearable device should be able to interact with the user within the context of a given situation. Despite sounding like something from a James Bond movie, such equipment is moving into the world of reality. DARPA, the United States’ Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, has issued a call for proposals for computer systems made of fabric. Such e-textiles could be used as global tracking instruments or solar power generators, or they might be worn as clothing or used to cover military vehicles and equipment.
