ABSTRACT

Netiquette is nothing more than etiquette on the Internet. It comes from combining “network” and “etiquette.” Although this seems simple enough, it has proven to be far more complicated than expected. Those who use the Internet often do not want what they input censored even if it is going to an electronic mailing list that may have thousands of members, some of whom may not appreciate the input or a particular remark. Because of the influx of diverse people using the Internet, netiquette is everchanging; however, most will say that Netiquette is based on the Golden Rule. Sometimes newbies to the Internet may need to follow examples to get a feel for what is or is not acceptable. Netiquette can also be defined as a code of conduct that governs what is generally considered to be the acceptable way for users to interact with one another online. Ross Shannon (2002) states that as in any public forum or culture, a collection of rules have developed over the years that govern how discussions are carried out on the Net. Sticking by them ensures a trouble-free time every time you connect to the Internet.
