ABSTRACT

Plant lists were obtained from other locations in Papua New Guinea, due to the lack of recent, comprehensive plant lists specifically for the Bird’s Head area. Sources include an ethnobotanical study of the Jimi Valley (Gorecki 1989) and a review of montane rainforests covering the Fatima Basin and Mt Kerigomna (Grubb & Stevens 1985). Grubb and Stevens’ work includes references to, and incorporates the first vegetation review ever done in the Bird’s Head by Gibbs (1917) that was otherwise unavailable. An article by Bulmer on foods that could be processed with grinding stones proved useful in providing ethnobotanical suggestions (Bulmer 1964). The flora used was The Alpine Flora of New Guinea (Van Royen 1982).
