ABSTRACT
In order to understand radioactivity, it is important to understand something about atoms. Atoms are differentiated by the numbers of protons and neutrons within their nuclei. The number of protons determines the chemical element, that is, a hydrogen atom contains 1 proton, while a uranium atom contains 92. The sum of the particles (protons plus neu trons) in the nucleus is the atomic mass of the atom.
