ABSTRACT
The control of leaks requires sufficient contact pressure, often called gasket-stress, which should be maintained even after the gasket and bolt material relax. The contact pressure is, of course, developed as the bolts are tightened. It is important to note that nonuniform tightening can lead to uneven distortion and opening of leak paths. Rough or damaged flange surfaces can further increase the leak rates.
