ABSTRACT

Pilots in command of turbo jet-powered airplanes are required by federal aviation regulations (FARs) to obtain additional certification of capability to operate each specific type of aircraft or family of aircraft. Although by and large these pilot operators already know how to fly airplanes in general, type certificates are required because turbo jets typically have highly sophisticated capabilities and complex systems far exceeding those of small simple airplanes. The assumption then is that the operation of one large turbine aircraft differs markedly from that of another type to a degree that skill in safe operation of one does not guarantee skill in operating another (Billings, 1996).
