Isoquinolinium quaternaries have been prepared by several of the synthetic routes discussed in the earlier sections on pyridine and quinoline. A series of N-alkoxymethyl isoquinolinium chlorides (51) were prepared and studied for antimicrobial activity [26]. The derivatives where R = octyl and decyl were reported to be the most active biocides. The ion exchange of isoquinolinium chloride with sodium coconut monoglyceride sulfate and sulfonate was described in U.S. Patent 3,431,265 [27]. The products of this exchange (52) were found to have good biocide properties.
