ABSTRACT

Up to 60% of head and neck cancer patients may be malnourished at diagnosis.1 Weight loss and malnutrition in head and neck cancer patients are primarily caused by a reduced food intake that may be due to both physical or psychological factors. Metabolic changes due to malignant disease may also contribute to the development of malnutrition. Treatment of head and neck cancer may further exacerbate a poor dietary intake thereby increasing the risk of complications during treatment.2
