ABSTRACT

CONCEPT OF WOUND BED PREPARATION The concept of wound bed preparation originally emerged primarily as a result of the development of advanced wound healing products, such as exogenous growth factors and bioengineered skin substitutes. It was recognized through careful clinical observation that chronic wounds must be properly prepared for these advanced products to be effective. This preparation included debridement of nonviable tissue and denatured extracellular matrix (ECM); control of bacterial burden and infl ammation, establishing optimal moisture balance; and stimulation of epidermal cell migration at the wound edge.
