Various modalities of treatment of keloids and hypertrophic scars have been presented here. However, it is important to note that the first rule of treatment involves prevention and patient education. Suggestions for the prevention of these lesions include avoidance of nonessential cosmetic surgery in patients known to form keloids and closure of all surgical wounds with minimal tension. Surgeons should also avoid mid-chest incisions and those crossing joint spaces, ensuring incisions follow skin creases whenever possible. Adjuvant therapies to surgery, with the exception of radiation, may also be considered.
