ABSTRACT

Over the past decades, a multitude of new search heuristics, often called “metaheuristics” have been proposed, many of them inspired by principles observed in nature. Common representatives include evolutionary algorithms (GAs) [1], ant colony optimization (ACO) [2], simulated annealing [3], tabu search [4], or estimation of distribution algorithms [5]. Besides the book at hand, overviews of several such metaheuristics can be found, for example, in References 6 and 7 or 8.
