ABSTRACT

Since the development of low-loss optical ˜ber in the late 1960s [1], designers of all sorts of systems for transmitting, detecting, and processing electronic signals have sought to exploit its uniquely advantageous characteristics. (™ese properties of optical ˜ber are discussed in Chapters 1 and 2.) ™e interconnection of optical sources, modulators, ampli˜ers, photodetectors, and other components using optical ˜ber so as to convey an electronic signal from one point to another is what is known as a ˜ber-optic link. ™e subject of this chapter is the use of ˜ber-optic links to transport radio frequency (RF) signals.
