ABSTRACT

Peripheral neurons express all the ASIC isoforms in high abundance; any given neuron contains several types of ASIC subunits that associate in various combinations giving rise to a diversity of channels with dierent properties. e spliced variant ASIC1b is present almost exclusively in sensory neurons, and ASIC3 is highly abundant in peripheral ganglia that innervate the heart, where low pH evokes currents of large magnitude, ~8 nA (Benson et al., 1999). e single transcript of ACCN5 is expressed at low levels across the central and peripheral nervous systems and in peripheral tissues such as the liver and the intestine. e most comprehensive analysis of localization and expression levels of all ASIC transcripts, in human and mouse brain, can be found at the Allen Brain Atlas (https://www.brain-map.org).
