ABSTRACT

In this concluding chapter, the author attempts to pull together the main threads of the Identity and Curriculum in Catholic Education initiative. The main outcomes of the empirical and action research conducted by the project along are identified as well as the missed opportunities and the main issues arising and lessons learned. From a curriculum change perspective, the difficulties experienced in finding school and teacher volunteers for participation in the action research suggests that the planned integration of Catholic perspectives across the curriculum was not regarded as a priority need in Catholic schools. It is also significant that teachers saw such integration in terms of ‘teachable moments’ and bearing witness through their relationships with students. Two macro-level issues are also identified – a failure of leadership in the part of the Catholic Education partners and the host University and major weaknesses in project governance, a particularly important aspect of partnership projects in general and school-university partnerships in particular.
