Geophysical Þelds generally possess a high variability at all scales. This is particularly true in oceanography, where physical, chemical, and biological Þelds display highly heterogeneous patterns at all scales, from millimeters to thousands of kilometers and from milliseconds to years. At small scales, the origin of this variability is mainly oceanic turbulence, and in this framework the study of aquatic ecosystems is deeply linked to the turbulent variability of the medium.
