ABSTRACT

Remote sensing, geographic information systems and spatial information sciences applied to human health were formally added to TC-VIII, WG2 in 2004. Consequently, the authors have chosen to present a general overview of the subject to introduce readers to its foundations. Special reference has been given to air quality and respiratory health; however, the references are more comprehensive in scope. Major concepts and trends are highlighted in Section 29.2. Sections 29.3, 29.4 and 29.5 address advancements in health surveillance (Section 29.3), an overview of selected programmes and activities related to air quality for health (Section 29.4) and reported data and technology needs and gaps (Section 29.5). Section 29.6 focuses on recommendations from major research sectors.
