ABSTRACT

Dietary fiber has a significant impact on the function of digestive tract, and a diet rich in fiber prevents the development of various functional diseases of digestive tract as well as disorders of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Daily dietary fiber consumption could also be estimated indirectly based on anticipating the level and structure of food consumption using balance methods and evaluation of family budgets. In Poland results concerning the level of consumption of the ground groups of food products based on the balance method and household budget surveys are published annually by Central Statistical Office in Statistical Yearbook. For monitoring of the changes in fiber consumption, an attempt has been undertaken in the present work to estimate the mass of the average daily food ration in Poland as well as the mass of plant products containing fiber consumed daily by an average Pole.
