ABSTRACT
The Congress of the United States of America authorized the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to conduct an inventory of dams in the United States through the National Dam Inspection Act of 1972. The resultant National Inventory of Dams (NID) was rst published in 1975 and updates have been made in the succeeding years, in accordance with the Water Resources Development Act of 1986. The most recent Dam Safety Act (2006) reauthorized the maintenance and update of the NID.
