Setting up an ART national registry
National assisted reproductive techniques (ART) registers are already in operation in many countries. The purpose of these registers is to monitor the efficacy of ART. In an increasing number of countries, these registers also monitor the safety of ART, primarily the safety of the children born, i.e. the medical risks. The registers are striving to achieve full coverage of all ART activities in a country, but this goal is reached only in a minority of countries, so far. Other issues that need to be addressed include varying definitions of events, problems with validation of data, and loss to follow-up rates.
