Pathogenesis of HIV-Associated Cardiovascular Complications in the HAART Era

Studies published before the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) have tracked the incidence and course of HIV infection in relation to both pediatric and adult cardiac illnesses (1). These studies show that subclinical echocardiographic abnormalities independently predict adverse outcomes and identify high-risk groups to target for early intervention and therapy.
