ABSTRACT

The overall operative risk of stroke and death due to CEA is ~7% for symptomatic carotid stenosis and ~3-5% for asymptomatic stenosis, and there is no evidence that risks are falling. However, the risk in patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis does vary in relation to the clinical indication and the characteristics of the patient. Early surgery in neurologically stable patients with a recent TIA or non-disabling stroke is not associated with a significant increase in operative risk.
