Magnetic resonance spectroscopy of multiple sclerosis: imaging axonal damage

This chapter briefly reviews the basic principles underlying the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to study axonal damage in multiple sclerosis (MS). Some of the important information that MRS has provided about the evolution of axonal damage in MS is described. Evidence for cortical adaptive responses that may contribute to functional recovery from new inflammatory lesions and to minimizing disability despite an increasing burden of irreversible damage is outlined.
