Characterization of Nonlinear Refractive Index Materials
As seen in the previous chapter, the nonlinear index of refraction, or the third order susceptibility, is an important parameter in the applications of nonlinear optics. It leads to a variety of phenomena. These phenomena, once understood, can in turn be used to measure the nonlinear index coefficient or x(3). This chapter describes several such characterization methods for studying materials exhibiting a nonlinear index of refraction.
