ABSTRACT
The development of a city may depend on favourable groundwater conditions or hydrogeology, but cities grow for all sorts of reasons. The functions of the city directly affect groundwater conditions, but often they are the last thing to be considered, and this has great implications for management policies, particularly in very rapidly growing areas. This chapter describes the relationship between city and groundwater, and explores how it may be managed.
