It is therefore important to quantify the effect of the non-uniform corrosion distribution on the ultimate compressive strength of structural elements as a function of the geometric properties. This quantification will contribute to a better prediction of their remaining strength for a given state of corrosion, which is important from the view point of a reliability-based inspection planning of the ship hull girder (e.g. Guedes Soares & Garbatov 1996, Wang et al. 2008, Teixeira et al. 2013a).
